Local Man walks Coast to Coast for Charity

St Bee’s, Cumbria

Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby

Rod Rowbottom of Kirton in Lindsey, is walking the 191 mile Coast to Coast walk in aid

of the charities below.

The walk starts at St. Bee’s on the Cumbrian coast and passes through some of England’s most beautiful landscapes, including the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.

Rod’s journey starts on the 1st August 2011 and ends when he gets his boots wet walking down the slope into the North Sea at Robin Hoods Bay!

Rod’s story.

“My dad died of cancer when I was young and my mum in law and two aunts also died of it only last year. Also various family members of my wife Jo and myself have suffered from the illness, Jo's cousin dying only a few weeks ago. In fact I don’t know anyone who has not been touched by cancer, whether directly or as a loved one being diagnosed with the illness. I feel I would like to support the three charities as they complement each other in providing treatment, care & support for cancer sufferers and their families through all stages of the illness”.

Rod has always supported Cancer Research, as many do, through regular donation but feels he would like to do more as it is extremely important that as much research as possible is carried out, to strive to find cures for cancers as soon as possible.

Rod Says “Whilst that still remains the Holy Grail, great strides are being made to enable sufferers to live much longer when being diagnosed with the illness, due to the on-going development of drugs & treatments.  The more we can provide for research will hopefully hasten the day when cancer is finally conquered.”

Rod has family and close friends who have benefited from support offered by The Odyssey Cancer Care Centre and Lindsey Lodge Hospice and he is keen to repay these wonderful organisations in addition to offering a share to Cancer Research who dedicate their resources to finding cures for cancer.

Rod stated “My wife Jo found that the Odyssey Cancer Care Centre provided an environment that facilitates independent and unbiased approach to caring. Jo was the primary carer who supported her mum after being diagnosed with cancer. Having received support from Odyssey during the 2 years of her mum’s illness, this

service really helped Jo cope better with the emotional and physical effects of living with cancer”.

Rod has supported Lindsey Lodge Hospice for many years through his former role of MD of Barry Fenton Insurance Brokers but says “Whilst I was always aware of the invaluable care Lindsey Lodge provides for those with life-limiting conditions, it was only recently that Jo & I witnessed at first-hand what a caring and dedicated team they have and what wonderful support they provide to their patients, families, and friends.  They cared

for my mum in law in her final days and after she passed away, continued to provide support to Jo.”

About the charities.

For the past 10 years the Odyssey Cancer Care Centre has been offering care and support using complementary therapies to those people diagnosed with cancer, their primary carer and health professionals from both North and South Banks of the Humber Bridge and beyond. Our current building is now sadly no longer suitable for the growing needs and numbers of clients referred to us.  We have ambitious plans to build and create a Centre of Excellence using ecological and sustainable designs and materials.  This project is estimated to cost £3 million.  The Odyssey Cancer Care Centre are truly grateful of this wonderful gesture offered by Rod and will support him wherever possible to raise a significant amount for all 3 charities.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice offers very special care for people in the North Lincolnshire area living with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease, heart or renal failure.  This help is given at a time in their lives when it is needed the most.

Although it is free for the patient it is not free to provide and this year will cost £1.9m to run.

We are so grateful to Rod for the support he is giving us by taking part in this challenge. He is certainly a star in our

eyes and deserving of our deepest gratitude. The motivation and determination required to do these challenges is awe-inspiring. Whilst completing is a huge personal achievement, we know that collecting sponsorship monies is almost more demanding. For this, we would also like to thank and include families and friends whose sponsorship and encouragement

is so important; this support and commitment is so deeply appreciated and vital in

raising much needed funds for the hospice.
